Mumbai: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray have joined forces to lead a grand public protest in Mumbai against the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging voter list manipulation and irregularities linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
The two leaders have issued a joint call to the people of Maharashtra to participate in the protest rally scheduled for Sunday. The march will begin at Metro Cinema.
Thackeray brothers target ECI over SIR process
The Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS on Saturday accused the Election Commission of deceiving voters and functioning as an extended wing of the ruling party at the Centre.
The demonstration aims to protest against what the parties have described as alleged voter list manipulation and structural irregularities associated with the SIR process of electoral rolls.
While the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) are leading the organisational preparations for the demonstration, the leaders have emphasised that the protest is intended to go beyond partisan politics.
“This is a rally of the people. To ensure it does not remain confined to a single party but becomes the collective voice of the entire political system and the citizenry, we will reach out to all political parties to join this front,” the statement said.
Opposition parties invited to join Mumbai rally
The organisers have called on political parties across the spectrum to join the protest and help build a unified opposition front.
The statement described the agitation as a battle to safeguard the country’s democratic framework and institutional integrity. It appealed to citizens to participate in large numbers and protest against what the leaders termed institutional bias and voter list manipulation under the SIR process.
The march is scheduled to begin from Metro Cinema in Mumbai.
The organisers appealed to the public to “participate in this rally in large numbers” and come together to protect democracy and the Constitution.
Raj Thackeray demands cancellation of SIR
Earlier, Raj Thackeray launched a strong attack on the BJP and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding the immediate cancellation of the ongoing SIR process.
He accused the ruling party of using key institutional figures to maintain an “endless grip on power” and called on opposition parties across the country to unite for a major agitation demanding the return of paper ballots.
