A report from Punjab reported that a woman admitted to a nursing home in Ludhiana was selling her newborn daughter for Rs 2.10 lakh. This deal was being made with a woman living in Moga. A nurse and a doctor are also being named in the deal. The woman, Sunita Devi, gave birth to this girl at Arora Nursing Home on February 13th. The initial explanation was that the woman already had four daughters, and now she had a fifth. She did not want a daughter, so she was selling the girl. This explanation for the incident is also unforgivable. In today’s times, the mindset of considering the birth of a daughter a misfortune must end.

Today, daughters are considered equal to sons. However, this woman and her family were selling their daughter based on conservative thinking. Police investigation revealed that some child-selling gangs are also active, contacting such women and trading children. Police have arrested five women in this case. It should be noted that a few days ago, the babies of two different women were stolen from a hospital in Jalandhar.

Stolen children and their sale is as serious a crime as the killing of a girl child in the past. This incident in Ludhiana is condemnable by every standard of humanity. The perpetrators must be punished swiftly. To achieve this, the police must be vigilant. It must also be investigated whether the rackets that have emerged to steal and sell children are linked to international trafficking. Incidents of the sale of innocent children demonstrate that no matter how prosperous a society becomes, social evils persist.

No matter how much effort is made to eradicate these evils through the penal code, they continue to resurface and plague society. They must be eradicated from the root.
