The Obsession with Perpetuating Wars— and the Global Toll

It has been over three months since the United States, issuing a threat to prevent the development of nuclear weapons, effectively imposed a war upon Iran. Israel has been allied with the U.S. from the very outset. The objective was to decimate Iran and seize its stockpile of enriched uranium. On the other hand, it has been over three years since Russia launched its major offensive against Ukraine. Since then, a tide of death has swept across the Gulf nations of West Asia and continues to unfold in the conflict zones between Russia and Ukraine.

Buildings are being reduced to rubble, lives are being lost, and the fundamental infrastructure of nations is being shattered—whether in the conflict between Iran and Israel, or in the war-torn regions of Ukraine and Russia. Recent reports indicate that, due to Israel’s relentless attacks on Lebanon, President Trump has grown irate with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. He has reportedly rebuked Netanyahu, demanding an immediate halt to the incessant strikes on Lebanon. While Netanyahu ostensibly acceded to the U.S. demands, drone attacks on Lebanon have nevertheless continued unabated.

Meanwhile, far from reaching any peace accord, the U.S. launched an attack on an Iranian island; in retaliation, Iran struck American military bases situated in Bahrain and Qatar. For Trump, this war has become an intractable nightmare. He now perceives his own political position to be in jeopardy, as public outrage against him continues to mount among the American populace. Furthermore, the spiraling inflation within the United States—a direct consequence of this conflict—has fueled widespread public resentment. In a fit of anger, Trump branded Netanyahu as “ungrateful,” yet the Israeli leader remained completely unmoved by the reproach. As for the prospects of peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, they appeared dim from the very beginning; the U.S. demands that Iran withdraw from the Strait of Hormuz and refrain from developing nuclear weapons, whereas Iran has identified the Strait of Hormuz as a lucrative source of revenue and remains adamant about levying tolls on passing vessels.

The fact that U.S. military forces are deployed in the Gulf of Oman appears to be of no concern to Iran whatsoever. On the contrary, he is issuing threats, warning that if the war continues in this manner, they will block the Red Sea shipping lanes as well. Ever since Israel launched massive attacks on Lebanon—culminating in the capture of one of its strongholds—Iran has been bent on withdrawing from the peace deal. Iran is unwilling to compromise at the expense of Lebanon; however, Israel shows no signs of stopping until it has reduced Lebanon to the same state as Gaza. Consequently, the war rages on unabated: the U.S. and Israel continue their strikes, while in retaliation, Iran has redirected its drones and missiles toward U.S. military bases. The world is weary of the madness displayed by these leaders; their statements and posturing shift by the minute. The war continues, and the destruction persists.
