‘This is what we get’: Priyanka Gandhi slams PM Modi after Trump’s tariff move

New Delhi: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff on India, claiming it was a consequence of diplomacy and efforts to avoid conflict between India and Pakistan.

Vadra remarked, “Everyone has seen what the American President said about tariffs, and he mentioned that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan. India will need to respond to both these issues. PM Modi travels everywhere, makes friends, and this is the result we get.”

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief and Lok Sabha MP Akhilesh Yadav voiced concern over the government’s handling of foreign policy, warning that recent developments signal the start of difficult times.

He stated, “For the last 11 years, this government claimed friendship with many countries, but now we see the consequences. This is the beginning of bad days. The youth need jobs. If the economy improves, employment will follow. But if obstacles persist, what will happen to our country’s economy?”

Trump earlier indicated that the US is still engaged in trade negotiations with India. He said that the US is in talks with India and will see what unfolds. Trump added that India has historically imposed some of the highest tariffs globally, with rates reaching 175% or more, making India one of the highest tariff nations in the world.

During a White House press conference marking the signing of a Congressional bill, Trump announced the tariffs alongside penalties for buying Russian oil, emphasizing that India is among the nations imposing significant tariffs on the US.
