Thousands in Indiana Still Without Power Nine Days After Deadly Storm

Indiana: Tens of thousands of residents in northwest Indiana are still without electricity, nine days after a deadly storm caused widespread damage across the region.

Northern Indiana Public Service Co. said around 63,500 customers remained without power on Thursday, with the largest number of outages reported in Lake County. Some areas may not be restored until Tuesday.

Schools Shut, Residents Struggle

In Gary, schools continue to remain closed as families deal with the prolonged power outage. Residents are throwing away spoiled food, searching for hot meals and looking for places where they can charge their phones.

Businesses Hit by Extended Outages

The lack of electricity has also forced several local businesses to shut down. Community groups and volunteers are helping affected families by distributing food, diapers and other essential supplies.

Financial and Emotional Stress Grows

Residents say the extended outage is adding to financial pressure and emotional stress, particularly in already vulnerable neighbourhoods. With restoration work continuing, many families remain uncertain about when normal life will return.
