Three-day fog and cold wave alert in Punjab; Rain expected in three districts

Punjab and Chandigarh will experience dense fog and a cold wave for three consecutive days starting today (Wednesday), until January 30th. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in this regard. Rain is also expected in three districts today.

Due to rainfall in the hills and rain and hailstorms in various parts of Punjab, the maximum temperature has dropped by 3.1 degrees Celsius. The temperature is now about 4.9 degrees below normal, intensifying the cold. The maximum temperature recorded in Bathinda was 18 degrees Celsius, while the lowest temperature of 7.7 degrees Celsius was recorded in Ludhiana.

Weather forecast for today

According to the Meteorological Department, dense fog is likely in some areas of Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Moga, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Malerkotla today (Wednesday).

Cold wave conditions are possible in some parts of Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala, Mansa, and Sangrur. However, light to moderate rain is expected in some areas of three districts: Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar.

Weather to change again from January 30th

Currently, a Western Disturbance is prevailing over North Pakistan and adjoining areas. There is a cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere, which is affecting the weather. This system extends from the northeast Arabian Sea to Saurashtra, Kutch, and Western Rajasthan, reaching Punjab. Another new Western Disturbance is likely to affect Northwest India from the night of January 30, 2026, leading to a change in weather conditions. Minimum temperatures will drop.

The Director of the Meteorological Department, Surendra Pal, said that light rain is possible in some areas on January 28, 31, and February 1. Rain is also expected in some parts of the state on February 2. Minimum temperatures could drop by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next two days. After that, no significant change in temperature is expected.
