Three-year-old boy falls into borewell in Ujjain, rescue operation underway

Bhopal/Badnagar, Madhya Pradesh: A three-year-old boy is trapped in a 70-foot-deep borewell in Jhalaria village, about 75 km from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. A rescue operation is underway to rescue him.

The boy, named Bhagirath Devasi, fell into the borewell between 7:30 and 8 p.m. on Thursday evening while his family was grazing sheep in the field.

How ​​the accident happened

According to the family, a sheep accidentally removed a stone placed on top of the borewell. Curious, Bhagirath, the youngest of three brothers, came from behind and removed the lid to look inside, when he slipped and fell into the pit.

Bhagirath is the son of Praveen Dewasi, originally from Gudanala village in Pali district, Rajasthan. The family had come here three days earlier to graze cattle. His mother witnessed the incident but was unable to save him in time. His father was in Rajasthan at the time.

NDRF-SDRF Teams Engaged in Rescue

NDRF teams from Bhopal and SDRF teams from Harda, Indore, and Ujjain are at the scene for rescue operations.

A camera has been inserted into the borewell to monitor the child’s condition, and he is being provided oxygen. His condition is currently reported to be stable.

Teams are digging a parallel pit using Poclain and JCB machines, but after reaching about 40 feet, the work has slowed due to rocky ground. Hammer machines have been brought in from Bhopal and Indore to break the rocks. Efforts are underway to install a rescue ring and rope to pull the child out.

Administration alert, tension prevails in the village

Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma stated that the child is trapped at a depth of approximately 70 feet and every effort is being made to rescue him safely.

He added that the rescue operation is taking time due to the rocky terrain in the area, but the child’s condition is currently stable. His actual condition will be clear only after he is released.

SDRF Commandant Santosh Jat stated that efforts are being made to pull the child out using a ring attached to a rescue rope.

Tension prevails throughout the village and surrounding areas, and the operation, which lasted all night, has now reached a crucial stage. The administration has deployed all necessary resources, and senior officials are continuously monitoring.

Borewell accidents involving children are a frequent occurrence in rural India, highlighting the need for stricter regulations to ensure the safe covering of blocked borewells. Prayers are being offered from across Madhya Pradesh for the safe rescue of little Bhagiratha.
