Tibet rocked by second earthquake within 24 hours

Tibet experienced a second earthquake measuring 4.0 magnitude, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km, which increases the likelihood of aftershocks and potential damage.

In a post on X, the NCS reported, “EQ of M: 4.0, on 30/07/2025 at 11:31:02 IST, Latitude: 28.32 N, Longitude: 87.65 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Tibet.” Earlier earlier on the same day, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the region.

Shallow earthquakes, like these, tend to be more destructive because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, often resulting in stronger ground shaking and more structural damage.

The Tibetan Plateau is known for frequent seismic activity due to the collision of tectonic plates. The ongoing movement between the Indian and Eurasian plates causes regular earthquakes, contributing to the uplift of the Himalayas’ peaks.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall early Wednesday morning in Tibet caused flooding in rivers flowing into Nepal. Authorities issued warnings in three districts. The district of Rasuwa, bordering the Tibetan region, suffered a flash flood on July 8, which claimed seven lives and left over a dozen people missing after the Lhende River swept away infrastructure near the Nepal-China border.

Rainfall earlier in the day triggered flooding in the Trishuli River, raising water levels around Uttar Gaya in Rasuwa and the Kispang area’s Trishuli 3B Hub. As water levels continue to rise in Rasuwagadhi, authorities have issued flood warnings and remain on high alert.
