Timeless source of knowledge, expression: PM Modi on World Sanskrit Day

New Delhi: On the occasion of World Sanskrit Day on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings and underlined the language’s vital role in safeguarding India’s ancient wisdom and cultural heritage.

In a post on X, he described Sanskrit as “a timeless source of knowledge and expression” with influence across multiple sectors. He also praised the efforts of people worldwide who are learning and promoting Sanskrit.

Government Efforts to Promote Sanskrit

The Prime Minister noted that over the past decade, the government has implemented several initiatives to revive and popularise the language.

These include establishing Central Sanskrit Universities, setting up Sanskrit Learning Centres, offering grants to scholars, and launching the Gyan Bharatam Mission to digitise manuscripts—benefiting countless students and researchers.

Cultural Leaders Call for Preservation

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath echoed similar sentiments, calling Sanskrit “the expression of India’s soul” and “an eternal source of timeless knowledge.” He urged citizens to preserve and incorporate Sanskrit into daily life.

Celebrated this year on August 9, World Sanskrit Day coincided with Shravan Poornima and honours Sanskrit—revered as Devavani, the language of the gods, and one of the most structured languages in history.

While no longer a daily spoken language, Sanskrit continues to thrive in rituals, classical music, philosophical literature, and academic study.
