Trinamool Faction Files 4 Police Complaints Against Rebel Group Over Alleged Misuse of Party Symbol and Leadership Claim Row

Kolkata: The original but minority faction within Trinamool Congress, which is continuing with its political allegiance towards the former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, the party’s general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, has filed four separate complaints at four police stations in and around Kolkata in the last 24 hours against the rebel but majority faction led by expelled party legislator Ritabrata Banerjee.

What Happened

The complaints were lodged across four police stations under both Kolkata Police and Bidhannagar City Police jurisdictions, marking a fresh escalation in the internal factional dispute within the Trinamool Congress.

Police Stations Where Complaints Were Filed

Of the four police stations where the complaints have been lodged, two are under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police, and the other two are under the jurisdiction of the Bidhannagar City Police.

The Kolkata Police stations include Kalighat Police Station and Pragati Maidan Police Station.
The Bidhannagar City Police stations include New Town Police Station and Bidhannagar Cyber Police Station, where the last complaint was also filed.

Why the Complaints Were Filed

The essence of the four complaints, according to a party insider, is the unauthorised use of the Trinamool Congress party logo in mass programmes organised by the rebel faction. The complaints also allege that the rebel group was illegally announcing Arup Roy as the party chairperson, replacing Mamata Banerjee.

Background of the Factional Dispute

The minority faction claims that during a 2022 organisational conference of the Trinamool Congress, delegates voted to retain Mamata Banerjee as party chairperson for life. They argue that party rules require that any organisational conference be held every five years, with the next due in 2027.

They further stated that only Mamata Banerjee, as chairperson, can convene a special session if needed, and accused the rebel group of violating party protocol by making unilateral leadership declarations and continuing to use the party logo.

Rebel Faction’s Stand

The rebel camp, however, stated that the matter related to the party symbol and funds is already pending before the Election Commission of India (ECI). They added that the final decision will be taken at the Commission level.
