Today is the last day of the Punjab Assembly Monsoon Session; 8 bills to be introduced

Amritsar: Today is the last day of the Punjab Assembly’s monsoon session. Approximately eight bills are expected to be introduced in the House. Among these are the Punjab Common Infrastructure (Amendment) Bill, the Unaided Educational Institutions Fees Amendment Bill, and the Punjab State Outsourced Personnel Bill.

The bill related to outsourced employees provides for the removal of approximately 65,000 employees from outsourcing and contracting systems and bringing them on contract under the Punjab government. There is a possibility of uproar in the House on the last day of the session as well. The opposition is demanding an extension of the proceedings.

Government cornered the central government, the opposition raised questions about the Punjab government

During the monsoon session, Congress MLAs targeted the government on several issues. Congress MLAs arrived at the Assembly wearing black sashes and raised issues related to Punjab. On the other hand, the government cornered the central BJP government by introducing a resolution against it.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan also took aim at the central government. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Ashwani Sharma demanded answers from the Punjab government on the mining issue and raised questions about illegal mining. The Congress suggested forming a committee to address the matter.

 August 3: Resolution against the Central Government regarding paper leaks

On the first day of the session, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema introduced a resolution condemning the central government over the paper leaks reported across the country, including the NEET exam. Congress MLAs raised the issue of the Pharmacy Officer paper leak in Faridkot and demanded the resignation of the Education Minister. They then staged a walkout from the House, raising slogans.

 August 4-5: Resolution on E20, Bill on Outsourced Employees

On August 4, the Assembly unanimously passed a resolution demanding the central government halt the mandatory use of E20 ethanol-blended fuel until technical concerns related to it are resolved.

On August 5, a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann approved six ordinances and bills. These included bills related to outsourced employees and private school fees. A heated debate also took place on the same day between AAP and Akali Dal MLAs over the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

August 6-7: Congress walkout, employees protest

On August 6, Congress MLAs, led by Pratap Singh Bajwa, walked out of the House over law and order, rising debt, and the old pension scheme. Later, Congress leaders and MLAs protested outside the Assembly.

On August 7, thousands of government employees and pensioners marched in Chandigarh demanding the restoration of the old pension scheme and payment of pending dearness allowance (DA). Police used water cannons to disperse the protesters.
