Top Firms Lose Rs 1.56 Lakh Crore as HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance Lead Losses Amid Sensex, Nifty Fall

Mumbai: India’s biggest listed companies had a difficult week on the stock market, with eight of the top 10 firms losing a combined Rs 1.56 lakh crore in market value. HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finance accounted for the largest declines, while TCS and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) were the only companies in the group to record gains.

The fall came during a holiday-shortened trading week in which both major stock market indices ended lower. The BSE Sensex dropped 1,605.44 points, or 2.15 per cent, while the NSE Nifty fell 546.15 points, or 2.36 per cent.

The decline was also visible across the wider market. The total market capitalisation of companies listed on the BSE fell by Rs 20.79 lakh crore over four trading sessions. It stood at Rs 451.83 lakh crore at the end of the week, down from Rs 472.62 lakh crore on October 16.

Bajaj Finance was the second-biggest loser. Its market value dropped by Rs 34,180.51 crore, taking its total valuation to Rs 5.77 lakh crore.

Together, these eight companies lost Rs 1,55,671.9 crore in market value during the week.

TCS and L&T Manage to Post Gains

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) were the only companies among the top 10 to finish the week with an increase in market capitalisation.

TCS added Rs 23,517.56 crore to its market value, taking its valuation to Rs 9.15 lakh crore. L&T recorded a gain of Rs 1,788.66 crore, bringing its market capitalisation to Rs 5.02 lakh crore.

Their gains stood out against a week of broad losses among India’s largest listed companies, as both the Sensex and Nifty came under pressure.
