In touch with Indian nationals in Venezuela, Colombia for extending necessary assistance: MEA

New Delhi: Amid the deteriorating political situation in Venezuela, India on Friday said it is keeping a “close watch” on developments in the region and is ready to provide necessary assistance to the Indian community there and in neighboring Colombia.

Reduced, but contact continues

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a regular media briefing that the Indian community in Venezuela is small—about 50 people—and the Indian Embassy is in constant touch with them through travel advisories. There are also approximately 650 Indian nationals in Colombia, with whom the Embassy is in contact. He said, “Wherever our citizens need assistance, we will provide full support.”

Venezuela crisis: Concerns rise after US action

The situation in Venezuela escalated when President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested by US special forces in Caracas and taken to the US on January 3 during a controversial US military operation. The operation, called *Operation Absolute Resolve, involved bombings and airstrikes in the Venezuelan capital, and Maduro was taken to New York where he is to face charges related to drug trafficking and terrorism.

Jaishankar urges peaceful resolution

Earlier this week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed concern and urged all parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of the Venezuelan people and pursue a peaceful resolution and dialogue.

India has previously expressed concern

On January 4, India described the crisis as a matter of “deep concern” and said that all parties concerned should resolve issues through dialogue to ensure peace and stability. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also stated that India’s support is for the well-being and safety of the Venezuelan people, and that the Indian Embassy will continue to provide assistance during the crisis.

Security and advisory issued

India has advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela and to remain in contact with the Embassy in case of a crisis. Previously, the MEA had advised citizens living there to remain vigilant, stay away from public places, and evacuate as needed.
