Traditional Arts Driving Social & Economic Empowerment: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that India’s traditional arts are not only preserving cultural heritage but also becoming a major medium for social empowerment and economic progress.
In the 129th edition of his monthly radio program “Mann Ki Baat,” he specifically shared inspiring stories of women who are promoting art and culture while also creating employment for local people.

Citing the example of lace craftsmanship in Narasapuram, Andhra Pradesh, he said that women have been preserving this art for generations. The state government and NABARD are working together to provide artisans with modern designs, better skill training, and markets.

“Narasapuram lace has also received a GI tag. Today, more than 500 products are being made from it, and nearly one lakh women from over 250 villages are earning their livelihoods,” PM Modi said.

Culture is becoming a source of employment in Manipur

The Prime Minister mentioned two exceptional women from Manipur who have transformed traditional skills into livelihood opportunities.

He praised Margaret Ramatharasiam of Churachandpur, who has employed more than 50 artisans by connecting bamboo and wood handicrafts to a wider market and expanding the reach of her products to several states, including Delhi.

Similarly, Chhokhoney Krichena of Senapati district leveraged her traditional farming experience to integrate it with floriculture, setting an example for empowering local communities.

“When traditional knowledge is adopted with a modern perspective, it can become a vital tool for economic progress,” PM Modi said, urging people to share more such stories.

India’s Cultural Diversity Reflected Through Festivals

The Prime Minister said that festivals are celebrated across every season and region in India, a testament to the country’s unique cultural diversity.

Referring to the Rann of Kutch Festival, he said that the festival began this year on November 23rd and will continue until February 20th.

Kutch’s folk culture, art, music, and the unique beauty of the White Rann are attracting tourists from India and abroad.

He reported that over two lakh people had participated in the Ranotsav in just one month.

“Whenever you get the opportunity, do visit such festivals and enjoy India’s diversity,” the Prime Minister said.
