Train derails in Pakistan’s Punjab, killing 4 and injuring over 30

Islamabad: A major train accident occurred on Tuesday in the Multan district of Pakistan’s Punjab province. At least four passengers were killed and over 30 injured when the Rehman Baba Express derailed near the Sher Shah railway station. According to local media reports, the train was heading towards Peshawar at the time of the accident.

Pakistan’s Railway Minister Hanif Abbas has confirmed the deaths of four passengers in the train accident. He has also appointed the Federal Government Railway Inspector (FGIR) as the investigating officer to investigate the matter.

    Loco pilot reports sudden jolt

The train’s loco pilot, Rizwan Abbas, said the train was traveling at a speed of about 100 kilometers per hour. As the train was passing through the Sher Shah station area, he suddenly felt a jolt.

He said he applied the brakes immediately after the jolt and stopped the train. According to Rizwan Abbas, when he exited the engine and looked back, the passenger coaches had derailed and were lying outside the tracks.

Frequent train accidents in Pakistan raise concerns

Several train derailments have occurred in Pakistan over the past year. These accidents have raised concerns about the maintenance of trains and tracks and possible negligence by Pakistan Railways.

On October 1, two passenger trains, the Shalimar Express and the Pakistan Express, narrowly escaped a major accident after derailing.

Earlier in August, four coaches of the Awam Express, traveling from Peshawar to Karachi, derailed near Lodhran railway station, killing one person and injuring at least 24 passengers. According to Pakistan-based Geo News, Lodhran Deputy Commissioner Lubna Nazir stated that the injured included 16 men, four women, and three children.

Coaches of the Zafar Express also derailed in July

In July, three coaches of the Zafar Express derailed after an explosion on the railway track near Shikarpur in Sindh province. One passenger was injured and train services were disrupted on the affected route. Such incidents have raised questions about railway safety and infrastructure maintenance in Pakistan.
