Triangular contests in Tarn Taran, Budgam, Nagrota as bypolls to begin today

New Delhi: By-elections for eight assembly constituencies across six states and one Union Territory are set to take place on November 11, with counting scheduled for November 14 alongside the Bihar Assembly election results.

The constituencies going to polls include Budgam and Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir, Anta in Rajasthan, Ghatsila in Jharkhand, Jubilee Hills in Telangana, Tarn Taran in Punjab, Dampa in Mizoram, and Nuapada in Odisha.

In Budgam (J&K), polling follows Omar Abdullah’s decision to vacate the seat after retaining Ganderbal. The National Conference’s Aga Mehmood faces PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir and BJP’s Syed Mohsin. In Nagrota, NC’s Shamim Begum is contesting against BJP’s Devyani Rana and J&K Panthers Party chief Harsh Dev Singh after the seat fell vacant due to the death of BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana.

In Rajasthan’s Anta, the bypoll was triggered by BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena’s disqualification. Congress has fielded former minister Pramod Jain Bhaya, while BJP’s candidate is Morpal Suman.

In Jharkhand’s Ghatsila, the contest follows JMM minister Ramdas Soren’s demise. His son, Somesh Soren, is the JMM candidate against NDA’s Babulal Soren.

The Jubilee Hills bypoll in Telangana was necessitated by the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath. His wife Sunitha is contesting for BRS against Congress’s V. Naveen Yadav and BJP’s Lankala Deepak Reddy.

In Punjab’s Tarn Taran, the seat fell vacant after AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal’s death. AAP’s Harmeet Singh Sandhu, SAD’s Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, BJP’s Harjit Singh Sandhu, and Congress’s Karanbir Singh Burj are in the fray.

In Mizoram’s Dampa, four parties—MNF, ZPM, BJP, and Congress—are contesting, while Odisha’s Nuapada bypoll sees BJD’s Snehangini Chhuria pitted against BJP’s Jay Dholakia and Congress’s Ghasiram Majhi.

Polling will be held under tight security across all constituencies.
