Trinetra’ Model to Tackle Crowd- related Issues

A common grievance among the public is that meant for seamless traffic—are frequently blocked by groups resorting to mob tactics under the guise of protests. Such blockades make it difficult even for ambulances carrying patients to pass through. Traffic congestion is not the only challenge; if one travels to the mountains, long queues of tourists are a common sight. At every scenic tourist destination, lines of vehicles stretching for hours can spoil the experience. During festivals and religious celebrations, crowds become so dense that the jostling and pushing can shatter the devotees’ sense of reverence and faith.

The Kumbh Mela is a major center of faith for devotees, yet reports of deaths due to stampedes emerge from there as well. It is common for pilgrims to get separated from their groups or lose their belongings amidst the crowds at religious sites. A specific innovative solution is being adopted to address this issue. While traffic jams caused by political protests depend largely on administrative efficiency and the sense of responsibility among political leaders, the government has adopted an AI model to manage the massive crowds that gather at religious sites. Introduced in 2023, this model is known as ‘Trinetra’.

It was first implemented in Ujjain—the city of Mahakal—where the influx of crowds is ceaseless. Given that this AI system, ‘Trinetra’, yielded positive results in Ujjain, the question arises: why not implement it across the entire country? It could be utilized during events like the Kumbh Mela, the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, visits to Jwala Ji, and the arduous journey to the Amarnath shrine (Baba Barfani). The AI model introduced in Ujjain was launched at a cost of Rs 5.25 crore; it provides smart surveillance of restricted areas. When this model was implemented in Ujjain, over 700 smart, high-resolution cameras were installed; these helped locate more than 600 missing pilgrims and recover the lost belongings of 53 others. In fact, these AI-based cameras also perform video analysis. They enable facial recognition, object tracking, and the generation of automatic alerts.
