Three of Six Tripura Jailbreakers Re-Arrested, Hunt Continues for Others

Agartala: With the arrest of one more fugitive from neighbouring Assam on Friday, Tripura Police have so far re-apprehended three of the six inmates who escaped from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in north Tripura district last week, officials said.

Fugitive Caught in Assam

A police team from Dharmanagar, led by Sub-Inspector Biswajeet Das, re-arrested Rahim Ali from Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj) in southern Assam, with assistance from Assam Police.

Two others — Abdul Patta and Narayan Chandra Datta — had been apprehended earlier on October 1 and 2 from Dharmanagar areas.

Details of the Jailbreak

On October 1, six inmates — five undertrials and one serving life imprisonment — escaped after attacking a guard with sharp weapons.
The fugitives were identified as Abdul Pata, Rahim Ali, Narayan Chandra Dutta, Rosan Ali, Nazim Uddin, and Sunil Debbarma.

Among them, Debbarma, a convict serving life for serious crimes including murder, remains at large. Dutta, a Bangladeshi national, was earlier arrested under the Passport Act, while Pata, from Assam’s Sribhumi district, faces charges under the NDPS Act for drug-related crimes.

Disciplinary Action Against Jail Staff

Following the escape, the Inspector General of Prisons suspended Jailor Dhananjoy Bhattacharya and four warders — Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Prashikhan Jamatia, Mohammad Gedu Mia, and Notan Lodh. Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against all five.

Search Intensifies Along Borders

North Tripura Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai said multiple teams are carrying out intensive search operations in North Tripura and Unakoti districts.
All police stations and border posts have been put on high alert, while the BSF has been asked to tighten vigil along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent any escape.

Tripura’s north district shares boundaries with Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh, making the search operation critical across state and international borders.
