Tripura Student Murder: Rahul Gandhi, Mizoram CM Call for Tough Action

New Delhi: The death of Tripura student Angel Chakma, who was the victim of a racial attack in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, has sparked strong reactions across the country. Several organizations, including Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduohoma, and former Manipur CM N. Biren Singh, have called the incident a hate crime and demanded harsh punishment for the perpetrators.

Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences on social media platform X, saying:

“This is a horrific hate crime… Hatred has been promoted and normalized in the country for years.”

He said that India is a country of love and diversity and no citizen should live in fear or humiliation.

Mizoram CM Lalduohoma said that this incident proves that people in the Northeast still face racial discrimination.

Former Manipur CM Biren Singh appealed that the Northeast be considered a pillar of India’s unity and strength, not a marginalized region.

Died during treatment after attack, family demands justice

Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student and son of a BSF jawan, was attacked on December 9 by some people who allegedly made racist remarks.

He died during treatment on December 26.

The family has appealed for strict punishment for the culprits to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, sharing the victim’s pain, said that Angel had told the attackers:

“I am Indian, not Chinese.”

He demanded that the case be investigated in a timely manner and that the perpetrators receive the harshest punishment.

Delay in FIR, Demand for CBI Investigation and Street Protests

The All India Chakma Students Union (AICSU) has written to the Uttarakhand Chief Minister demanding that the investigation be handed over to the CBI.

They allege:

A 12-day delay in filing an FIR
Ignoring the racial crime angle
Attempts to shield the accused

The main accused is feared to have fled to Nepal.

TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma has announced a reward of ₹10 lakh.

Several students and youth in Agartala held a candlelight vigil demanding justice.

Uttarakhand Police have so far arrested 5 accused and sent them to judicial custody.
