Trott Ends Afghanistan Coaching Tenure, Reflects on Memorable Journey

Chennai: Afghanistan’s final group game of the 2026 T20 World Cup saw outgoing coach Jonathan Trott reflect on his tenure with the side as he looks ahead to his next coaching opportunity. Trott’s time in charge came to an end on Thursday when the team was knocked out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup despite an impressive 82-run victory over Canada in Chennai.

Key Achievements Under Trott’s Leadership

Since taking charge in 2022, Trott played a key role in Afghanistan’s growth and competitiveness. Under his guidance, Afghanistan achieved milestones such as their first-ever semifinal finish at the 2024 T20 World Cup, historic wins over top-ranked teams, and notable bilateral series victories. The Afghanistan Cricket Board expressed gratitude for his contribution on X.

Trott Reflects on Coaching Journey

“I always feel fortunate enough to have had a lot of memories as a player but also now as a coach,” Trott said. He highlighted victories over Pakistan, England, Bangladesh, and South Africa, as well as nurturing a group of talented players. Trott admitted that coaching Afghanistan was never part of his original plan, stepping in after Graham Thorpe could not take up the role.

Looking Ahead: Advice for Afghanistan’s Future

Trott suggested developing more reliable pacers to support spinners Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, enabling the team to compete globally. “The consistency and development of some more seamers that will aid the spinners and not just be heavily reliant on spinners… they’ll be able to handle all different varieties of conditions,” he said. Trott plans to take some time off before embarking on his next coaching chapter.
