The much-anticipated talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to commence today. Eight years after his previous visit in 2017, Trump arrived in China on Wednesday, May 13, for a three-day official tour. Accompanying him are his son, daughter-in-law, and a delegation of 17 prominent American business leaders—including billionaire Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and the CEO of Boeing. This visit could potentially result in a Boeing aircraft deal worth over 9 trillion rupees. China is expected to purchase 500 Boeing 737 Max jets, 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and several 777X wide-body aircraft. If this deal is finalized, it would mark the largest transaction in the history of aviation. The visit also holds significant importance for Elon Musk, as he seeks to leverage the opportunities presented by Tesla’s Shanghai factory and its reliance on the Chinese market. The world is watching in anticipation, hoping that this visit might foster such constructive trade relations between the US and China that Beijing ceases its behind-the-scenes instigation of Iran—thereby gifting the world the peace that would follow the averted threat of a US-Iran war. Business leaders from both nations are gathering for these discussions. In addition to trade agreements, the US also intends to engage China in talks regarding rare earth minerals. China could offer assurances regarding the supply of rare earth minerals, while the US, in turn, could pledge to rationalize its tariffs. It is worth recalling that during a previous period of tension, the US had imposed a 145 percent tariff on China—a rate that was subsequently adjusted to fall within the 19 to 24 percent range. It is a well-known fact that the US and China hold divergent stances regarding Taiwan; China views it as an integral part of its own territory, whereas the US supports its independent existence. Should a mutual understanding be reached regarding this complex issue, it would prove beneficial for the entire world. Furthermore, in the ongoing race for modernization, the US and China are currently locked in a tug-of-war over the development and dominance of AI models. The United States alleges that China has stolen its AI model, while China denies this claim and is simultaneously striving to reduce its reliance on American chips by developing domestic alternatives. This complex issue may well be addressed during the ongoing talks. Furthermore—following Trump’s visit—Russian President Vladimir Putin is also scheduled to arrive in China on May 18. It has now become crucial to observe what new developments—whether positive or negative—Putin’s visit to China, coming right on the heels of Trump’s, will bring about for global peace and international trade
