Trump Blames Democrats for Economic Woes, Announces $1,776 Bonus for US Troops in Holiday Address

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a nationally televised prime-time address Wednesday, criticizing Democrats for the country’s economic challenges and announcing a $1,776 Christmas bonus for American troops.

The speech, delivered as Americans prepare for the holidays, focused more on the nation’s political divisions than on a message of unity. He reiterated his claim that the economy is poised for a major boom, even as concerns about inflation, housing costs, and everyday necessities have grown among the public.

$1,776 ‘Warrior Dividend’ for Troops

Trump announced that approximately 1.45 million active-duty U.S. troops would receive a $1,776 bonus for Christmas. He said the total payout would be approximately $2.6 billion and would be funded by revenue from import tariffs.

“The checks are already in the mail,” Trump said.

He explained that the amount symbolizes the year 1776, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Trump called the bonus a “Warrior Dividend” and said it was intended to ease financial burdens on military families.

Emphasis on the Economy and Tariffs

Trump defended his controversial import tariffs, although he acknowledged they have led to higher prices for goods. He argued that the tariffs would ultimately strengthen the economy and boost manufacturing jobs in the United States.

Standing in the White House Diplomatic Reception Room, between a Christmas tree and a portrait of George Washington, Trump blamed former President Joe Biden for the current economic challenges.

“Eleven months ago, I inherited a mess, and I’m fixing it,” he said, promising an “economic boom unlike anything the world has ever seen.”

Public Concerns Remain High

Despite Trump’s optimistic pronouncements, public sentiment remains more negative. Polls show widespread dissatisfaction with inflation and a weakening job market. The consumer price index is now rising at an annual rate of 3%, up from 2.3% in April.

Job growth has slowed, averaging only 17,000 new jobs per month since April. The unemployment rate has risen to 4.6% from 4% in January.

Political Situation and Declining Popularity

Trump’s address came at a time when his popularity is declining and the 2026 midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress, are approaching. Recent electoral defeats have fueled concern within his party.

Traditionally, presidential addresses are less politically partisan, but Trump delivered remarks in his characteristic campaign style. He spoke rapidly and at times angrily, and promised “the most aggressive housing reform plans in American history.”

Other Policy Challenges

Beyond the economy, Trump is facing public opposition to his immigration policies. He blamed Democrats for rising health insurance premiums as Obamacare subsidies expire, although he has not yet offered a clear solution.

After the address, Trump asked his team how the speech went. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wills assured him that he had stayed perfectly within the allotted 20 minutes.

The address reflected Trump’s continued attempt to emphasize his economic promises and rally support — while most Americans remain unconvinced.
