Trump announces historic $300 billion oil refinery in Texas, thanks Reliance

USA: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) announced the opening of the first new US oil refinery in 50 years in Brownsville, Texas, with India’s Reliance Industries Limited contributing investment.

Announcing the “historic” $300 billion deal on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump thanked energy giant Reliance Industries for this “tremendous” investment.

“America is returning to true energy dominance! Today, I am proud to announce that America First Refining is opening the first new US oil refinery in 50 years in Brownsville, Texas. This is a historic $300 billion deal—the largest in American history, a major victory for American workers, the energy sector, and the great people of South Texas. Thank you to our partners in India and Reliance, their largest private energy company, for this tremendous investment,” he said.

He said that this new refinery will provide energy to American markets and increase energy production, strengthening national security.

“This has been made possible by our ‘America First Agenda,’ simplifying the permit process, and reducing taxes, which have attracted billions of dollars of investment back to our country. This new refinery to be built at the Port of Brownsville will power American markets, strengthen national security, increase American energy production, deliver billions of dollars in economic impact, and be the cleanest refinery in the world. It will power global exports and bring thousands of jobs and growth to a region that has long deserved it. This is an example of American energy dominance. America First, always!” he said.

Growing Conflict in West Asia

This announcement comes at a time when the ongoing conflict in West Asia has become even more widespread. Iran has targeted US military bases, embassies, and civilian and energy infrastructure in neighboring Gulf countries—the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan—with missiles and drones.

The regional conflict escalated following the death of 86-year-old Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike on February 28. In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Israeli and US bases in several Gulf countries. This tension has impacted global energy supplies and disrupted shipping along the vital sea route, such as the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalating tensions have also impacted global energy supplies, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial sea route. Nearly a fifth of the world’s oil shipments pass through it. This route is considered vital for global oil and gas supplies.
