Washington: US President Donald Trump on Sunday vowed to make a comeback after Republicans suffered a major setback in the midterm elections, describing the results as a “giant step back in History” for America.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the country had taken a step backwards following the election outcome. He also claimed that the stock market, which he said had been performing strongly under his leadership, suffered a one-day loss of $3 trillion.
“America took a giant step back in History with the results of the last Election,” Trump wrote. “Even the Stock Market, which has been a ‘ROCKETSHIP’ under ‘TRUMP,’ took a one day, 3 Trillion Dollar loss. But have no fear, we will be back, BIGGER AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!”
The midterm results marked a setback for the Trump administration, with Democrats gaining control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Trump’s deputy, JD Vance, blamed the ongoing Iran war for the Republican defeat, saying that some voters who supported the party in the 2024 presidential election had turned against it this time.
Trump Says Iran War Was Necessary, Stands by Military Action
Several Republicans echoed Vance’s assessment of the election outcome. Trump also acknowledged that the Iran war had contributed to the party’s poor performance in the midterms.
However, he defended the military operation, saying it had prevented Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Trump remained unapologetic and said he would take the same action again if required.
“But I can tell you that as far as that war is concerned, I would have done nothing different. We have totally broken their military. The navy’s gone. Their air force is gone. Their anti-aircraft is gone,” Trump said earlier.
“The Iran thing, we had to do, and we continue to do it. We have tremendous oil flowing out of the Hormuz Strait now. At the beginning, there was none. And, probably, that’s the primary reason – the price, not the war, the price (of oil).”
White House Changes Follow Republican Setback
In the aftermath of the midterm results, Trump has sacked Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff and is set to replace her with his loyalist Stephen Miller, who is expected to take charge on Monday.
Indian-American lawyer Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, who was serving as head of the US Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, has also resigned. Her departure makes her the first of Trump’s key allies to step down following the midterm drubbing.
Uncertainty remains over Trump’s next steps as Republicans look ahead to the 2028 elections. Analysts, however, believe major changes to his policies are unlikely, suggesting that his administration may continue with the positions that have drawn criticism in recent months.
