•Countries like Laos, Myanmar, Syria have the highest tariff of 40% or more.

•If an item is sent through another country to avoid tax, a 40% tariff will be levied on it.

•There is no direct 15% tariff imposed on EU goods. If a product has an existing duty of 10%, only an additional 5% will be added, but if the product is already paying a duty of 15% or more, there will be no tariff increase.

•A separate executive order of May 2025 is applicable on China, there has been no change in it. Right now it will have to pay 30% tariff as before.

•The tariff will be imposed on Canada from the night of August 1. The reason for this is that Canada has announced its support for Palestine as a separate country.

•The goods which are on their way to the US before the order comes into force will have to pay tax as per the old rules. If it reaches there by 5 October 2025, then the old tariff will be applicable on it.

•Now every country will have separate tracking in the US customs system.

The highest tariffs are on Syria, Laos and Myanmar

The highest tariffs have been imposed on poor countries like Syria, Laos and Myanmar. The US has imposed a heavy tariff of 40-41% on these two countries, which is the highest rate.

The US has very little trade with Syria, but it has still been subjected to a 41% high tariff. This is because of long-term economic sanctions imposed on Syria.

Myanmar’s exports to the US are mostly clothing, while Laos mainly ships electronics.

America feels that China is using these countries to avoid heavy tariffs on its goods. That is, ‘Made in China’ goods are being sent through countries like Laos or Myanmar to avoid tariffs.

According to a Reuters report, US imports from Laos more than doubled in 2024. The biggest reason for this is that Chinese companies shifted their solar panel factories to Laos so that they can avoid heavy US tariffs imposed on China.
