New Delhi: A special envoy of US President Donald Trump has reportedly suggested to FIFA that Italy be included in the upcoming World Cup instead of Iran. The tournament is scheduled to begin on June 11. This development came after Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV on social media.

Controversy Over Trump’s Comments

Trump sharply criticized the Pope’s stance on US immigration policy and the Iran war. He described the Pope as “weak on crime and bad for foreign policy” on TruthSocial, prompting reactions from several political leaders.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Trump’s comments “unacceptable.”

Plea for Italy’s inclusion

According to a report in the Financial Times, this proposal is seen as an attempt to mend the strained relationship between Trump and Meloni.

US envoy Paolo Zampolli said he had suggested Italy’s inclusion in the World Cup to Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He stated that Italy is a four-time champion and its performance qualifies it for inclusion.

Uncertainty over Iran’s participation

Italy has failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time. Iran qualified for the fourth consecutive time, but due to the war, it demanded that its matches be moved from the United States to Mexico.

FIFA President Infantino had previously stated that Iran was “welcome” to play in the World Cup. However, Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali later stated that the team’s participation was in doubt following the recent attacks.

Trump stated that Iran’s participation would not be appropriate due to security concerns.
