Twisha Sharma’s last rites performed in Bhopal after second autopsy

The last rites of Twisha Sharma were performed in Bhopal on Sunday, nearly 12 days after her death, following the completion of a second post-mortem examination ordered by the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The emotionally charged funeral took place amid heavy police security and intense public attention surrounding the high-profile case.

Twisha Sharma, originally from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12, just five months after her marriage to lawyer Samarth Singh. Her family has alleged that she faced severe dowry harassment and mental torture from her husband and in-laws.

Second Autopsy Conducted by AIIMS Delhi Team

A four-member forensic team from AIIMS Delhi arrived in Bhopal to conduct the second autopsy after the High Court accepted the family’s plea seeking a fresh examination. The procedure was carried out at AIIMS Bhopal under strict security arrangements and complete videography to maintain transparency.

According to reports, Twisha’s family had refused to perform her last rites until a second post-mortem was conducted. The family believed that the initial autopsy findings were not satisfactory and demanded an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, was present during the medical procedures and expressed hope that the fresh forensic examination would help uncover the truth. Family members stated that they had full faith in the AIIMS Delhi medical board constituted under court supervision.

Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognisance

The case has attracted nationwide attention and sparked outrage over alleged dowry harassment and procedural lapses in the investigation. In a major development, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter under a case related to alleged institutional bias and discrepancies in handling unnatural deaths at matrimonial homes.

Legal experts believe the intervention by the apex court has increased pressure on authorities to ensure a fair and transparent probe. The matter is scheduled to be heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant.

Husband in Police Custody

Meanwhile, Twisha Sharma’s husband, Samarth Singh, who had reportedly been absconding for several days after the incident, recently surrendered before authorities. A local court later sent him to seven-day police custody for further interrogation in connection with the case.

The role of Twisha’s mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, also remains under scrutiny as investigators continue to examine allegations made by the family. CCTV footage from a salon visited by Twisha hours before her death has also become part of the investigation.

Family Continues Fight for Justice

Following the second autopsy, Twisha Sharma’s funeral was conducted in Bhopal in the presence of grieving relatives and close family members. Reports suggest that her ashes may later be immersed in Rishikesh according to family traditions.

Even after the funeral, the family has maintained that their fight for justice will continue. They have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into all aspects of the case, which has now become one of the most widely discussed dowry death investigations in recent times
