Two Held After Encounter in Amritsar Rural; Petrol Bomb Attack Linked to Extortion Bid

Amritsar, July 15: The Amritsar Rural Police on Tuesday night arrested two alleged attackers following an encounter near Bhaini village. According to the police, the case is linked to an extortion threat, with the conspiracy allegedly orchestrated by a gangster operating from abroad.

Police said that on Sunday night, three petrol bombs were hurled at the house of Vikram Singh, a resident of Pandori Waraich village. No injuries were reported in the attack, although the house sustained damage. A case was registered and an investigation was launched immediately.

Accused Opened Fire on Police During Interception

During the investigation, police received information that two suspects were travelling on a motorcycle from Bhaini village towards Baoli village.

A police team set up a checkpoint to intercept them. Instead of stopping, the accused allegedly opened fire on the police party.

Police retaliated, during which one of the accused, Gurlal Singh, sustained a bullet injury to his leg. The second accused, Krishan Singh, was overpowered and arrested at the spot without any injuries.

Weapon, Motorcycle Recovered

The injured accused was admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Police claimed to have recovered a pistol and the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime from the two accused.

Attack Linked to Rs 30 Lakh Extortion Demand

Preliminary investigation revealed that Vikram Singh had earlier received a phone call from a gangster based abroad demanding an extortion payment of Rs 30 lakh.

According to police, he was also threatened with serious consequences if he failed to pay the money. Investigators believe the petrol bomb attack was carried out to execute that threat.

Probe Underway into Gangster Links

Police said the investigation is continuing to ascertain the criminal backgrounds of the accused, identify their associates, and verify their alleged links with the foreign-based gangster.

Officials said more significant revelations are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses.
