Two Youths of Punjabi Origin Arrested in Extortion-Related Shooting Case in Canada

Two Punjabi youths have been arrested in Canada in connection with a shooting incident linked to extortion. This action followed an investigation by the Surrey Police Service into a shooting incident at a residence, which was allegedly accompanied by threats.

According to the Surrey Police, the incident occurred on April 22 at approximately 12:40 AM, when officers received reports of shots fired at a home located on 87A Avenue. Police confirmed damage to both the residence and a vehicle; however, no injuries were reported.

The investigation was taken over by the Extortion Response Team, which subsequently identified a suspect vehicle. Later, with the assistance of the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team, the Canada Border Services Agency, and other units, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Surrey.

22-year-old Damanjit Singh is charged with intentionally or recklessly discharging a firearm at a location and possessing a prohibited weapon without a license. Identical charges have been leveled against 30-year-old Pardaman Singh. Both individuals remain in custody.

Damanjit is scheduled to appear in court on May 19, while Pardaman’s court appearance is set for June 1. The police have released photographs of the accused and have appealed to witnesses, victims, or associates to come forward with information to help dismantle this criminal network.

Recently, Canada’s FINTRAC (Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre) issued a special bulletin stating that gangs in Canada are utilizing financially vulnerable Indian youths who arrived on study permits as “foot soldiers” for extortion and violent activities. FINTRAC identified the Bishnoi gang and its rival, the Bambiha gang, as the primary drivers behind this violence.

The Canadian government officially designated the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization on September 29, 2025. The report further warned that smaller criminal groups and copycat gangs are also capitalizing on the notoriety of these major gangs to escalate extortion threats.
