UIDAI Issues New Rule: Aadhaar Can’t Be Used for Age Proof

New Delhi: A fresh clarification has been issued regarding the use of the Aadhaar card by the Unique Identification Authority of India. According to the new directive, Aadhaar will no longer be accepted as proof of date of birth, even if the date is printed on the card.

What UIDAI Says?

UIDAI has explained that Aadhaar’s primary purpose is to verify a person’s identity, not to certify personal details like date of birth. The authority stated that the date of birth mentioned on Aadhaar is based on information provided by individuals during enrolment or updates, and is not independently verified.

Aadhar doesn’t verify Age or DOB

The agency further clarified that Aadhaar authentication works by matching a person’s biometric and demographic details with its central database. While this confirms that the individual is genuine, it does not validate other details such as age or date of birth.

UIDAI also noted that agencies using Aadhaar—such as Authentication User Agencies (AUA) and KYC User Agencies (KUA)—have the discretion to decide whether to consider Aadhaar data for age-related purposes. Similarly, the use of Aadhaar for government schemes, subsidies, or services will depend on the policies of the concerned ministries or state authorities.

At the same time, UIDAI reiterated that Aadhaar in all its forms—physical card, e-Aadhaar, masked Aadhaar, offline XML, and QR code—will continue to be valid as proof of identity and address, subject to applicable rules.
