Moscow: At least 13 people, including a child, were killed and 75 others injured after Ukraine launched a major drone strike on the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk in the Tatarstan region, according to Russian authorities.
The attack targeted an oil refinery in the industrial city, located more than 1,000 km from the Ukrainian border. Ukrainian officials said the strike targeted the Taneco refinery, operated by Russian oil company Tatneft.
Child Among Those Killed
Regional authorities said 13 people were killed in the attack, with a child among the deceased. Citizens of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were also reported to be among those killed.
At least 75 people sustained injuries, while 21 of them were hospitalised for treatment, according to authorities.
The strike caused a major fire at the oil facility, with footage showing a large column of black smoke rising from the site. The videos could not be independently verified.
Taneco Refinery Targeted
Ukraine’s General Staff said its forces had struck the Taneco refinery as part of a campaign aimed at reducing Russia’s military potential.
Nizhnekamsk is a major industrial centre in Tatarstan, a region known for its oil and petrochemical industries. Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian energy infrastructure during the ongoing war.
The strike is being described as one of the deadliest Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory since the war began, with the high civilian death toll making it particularly significant.
Russia and Ukraine Trade Fresh Strikes
The attack came amid an escalation in long-range strikes by both Russia and Ukraine.
On Monday, Russian forces also carried out an artillery strike in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region that killed five people, according to Ukrainian officials.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it had shot down 456 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Ukraine reported that Russia had launched 126 drones in an overnight attack.
