Union Cabinet Approves Delhi Metro Phase 5A with Rs.12,015 Crore Budget

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved Delhi Metro Phase-V (A). This will significantly expand the metro network at a cost of ₹12,015 crore, further strengthening the capital’s transportation system.

The Delhi Metro has already made life easier for millions, and this expansion will mark a new chapter in the city’s connectivity.

What’s New in Phase V (A)

Under this plan, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will build 13 new stations over three years, including 10 underground and 3 elevated stations. This expansion will improve last-mile connectivity, reduce road congestion, and strengthen links between residential areas, commercial centers, and transit hubs.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated that this phase will add 16 kilometers to the metro network, taking the total length to over 400 kilometers.

Three New Metro Corridors

Three new corridors will be built under Phase V (A):

Ramakrishna Ashram Marg – Indraprastha:9.9 km, cost ₹9,570.4 crore
Aerocity – Airport Terminal-1:2.3 km, cost ₹1,419.6 crore
Tughlakabad – Kalindi Kunj: 3.9 km, cost ₹1,024.8 crore

These will ease travel in densely populated and high-traffic areas of the capital.

Environment will also benefit

According to the central government, this project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 33,000 tonnes annually as more people will use the metro instead of private vehicles.

Delhi Metro completing 23 years

This approval comes on the occasion of Delhi Metro completing 23 years. Currently, the metro network stretches over 352 kilometers and has 257 stations.

In addition, DMRC has also received the ICI Award 2025 for the Maujpur–Majlis Park corridor. This section is an extension of the Pink Line and, upon completion, will become the country’s first circular ring metro line.
