UP faces 5 days of bad weather, rain, hailstorms, and strong winds

Bad weather is expected in Uttar Pradesh for the next five days. A rain alert has been issued for western Uttar Pradesh today. According to the India Meteorological Department, several districts, including Bareilly, Agra, and Mathura, will remain cloudy, with light drizzle possible at some places.

Wind speeds could reach 50 mph. Due to an active Western Disturbance, there is a possibility of thunderstorms, thunderstorms, and hailstorms in some places until the end of March.

With no rain in the last 24 hours, temperatures rose by about 5 degrees Celsius. Prayagraj was the hottest, with a maximum temperature of 35.6°C, while Bijnor recorded a minimum temperature of 14.5°C.

Strong winds threaten crops

According to agricultural experts, rain and strong winds could impact Rabi, Zaid, and horticultural crops. Crops like pigeon pea, mustard, chickpea, peas, mung beans, and peanuts are currently in the grain-forming stage. Strong winds could cause the pods to burst and grains to fall.

Wheat crops may also fall, impacting production. Among vegetables, okra, tomato, bottle gourd, cucumber, watermelon, muskmelon, eggplant, and chili are at risk of flower and small fruit drop.

Farmers’ Advice and Compensation Provision

Farmers have been advised to harvest ripe crops immediately and store them in a safe place, and to ensure proper drainage in the fields to prevent waterlogging.

The government has also made provisions for relief. Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, farmers can file insurance claims for crop damage within 14 days of harvest. The district administration will survey the damage and submit a report, based on which the state government will determine compensation.
