UP Polls 2027: SP Reportedly Offers 55 Seats as Congress Seeks 150 in Seat-Sharing Talks

Lucknow: Seat-sharing negotiations between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections have come into focus, with the two parties reportedly seeking significantly different numbers of constituencies.

According to reports, an SP source has indicated that the party’s proposed ceiling for Congress is 55 seats, while Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai has said the party would not settle for fewer than 150 seats. The two parties have not publicly announced a final seat-sharing formula.

Congress Uttar Pradesh in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam has separately said that the party would not contest fewer than 150 seats under an alliance arrangement and that seat-sharing was likely to be finalised in October.

    SP-Congress Seat-Sharing Talks for UP 2027

The Samajwadi Party and Congress are seeking to continue their alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the 2027 Assembly elections. SP president Akhilesh Yadav has said that the alliance would continue, while also indicating that the allocation of seats would be linked to electoral considerations.

The reported difference between the two parties’ positions has emerged as a key issue ahead of formal negotiations.

Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly constituencies, making the division of seats between the alliance partners a major part of their election preparations.

Congress Seeks at Least 150 Seats

Congress has publicly indicated that it wants to contest at least 150 seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Rajendra Pal Gautam said the party has candidates available for all 403 Assembly constituencies and that Congress considers itself entitled to a substantial share of seats under the alliance. He said the seat-sharing arrangement was expected to be finalised in October.

The Congress and SP had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh together, but their negotiations for the 2027 Assembly election involve a different seat distribution across all 403 constituencies.

    SP Reportedly Considers 55-Seat Ceiling

On the other side, an SP source cited in reports has said that Akhilesh Yadav had decided not to offer Congress more than 55 seats.

The reported figure is substantially below Congress’s publicly stated demand of at least 150 seats, highlighting the gap between the two sides as negotiations take shape. The 55-seat figure has been attributed to an SP source and does not represent a publicly announced final agreement.

Recent reports have also indicated that the SP has been preparing organisationally across a large number of constituencies in the state, while Congress has been preparing candidates across all 403 seats.

Final Seat-Sharing Formula Yet to Be Decided

The SP and Congress have continued to describe themselves as alliance partners for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh election, but the constituency-wise arrangement remains under discussion.

The final seat-sharing formula will require agreement between the leadership of both parties. Until that happens, the reported figures of 55 seats for Congress from the SP side and Congress’s demand for at least 150 seats should be treated as negotiating positions rather than a concluded arrangement.
