UP Rain Fury: 56 Killed, 46 Injured in Three Days as Flood-Like Situation Hits Several Districts

Lucknow: Heavy rain and thunderstorms have claimed 56 lives and injured 46 people in Uttar Pradesh over a 60-hour period, while several districts are facing flood-like conditions, waterlogging and damage to homes and crops. The state received exceptionally heavy rainfall between September 25 and the morning of September 27, according to data from the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner’s office.

The intense spell of rain also damaged 1,021 houses across the state. Sitapur reported the highest number of deaths at seven, followed by Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich and Balrampur with five deaths each. Ayodhya and Gorakhpur reported four deaths each.

56 Districts Record Excessive Rainfall

The rainfall was far above normal across large parts of Uttar Pradesh. The state received 66.5 mm of rain between September 25 and the morning of September 27, compared with the normal 7.6 mm for the period. During the 24 hours ending Sunday, the state recorded 45.1 mm of rainfall against the normal 1.8 mm.

As many as 56 of Uttar Pradesh’s 75 districts recorded excessive rainfall. Farrukhabad recorded rainfall 7,385 per cent above normal, followed by Kannauj at 5,664 per cent, Shahjahanpur at 4,408 per cent, Hamirpur at 4,240 per cent and Mahoba at 4,100 per cent.

Heavy rain accompanied by winds of around 30-40 kmph affected Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Bareilly and several other areas. Trees and electricity poles were uprooted, while roads, villages and agricultural fields were inundated in several locations.

Ghagra, Rapti Rivers Raise Flood Threat

The rising water levels of the Ghagra and Rapti rivers have added to concerns in low-lying areas.

At Elginbridge in Barabanki, the Ghagra was flowing at 106.14 metres at 8 am, above its danger level of 106.07 metres. Its level was forecast to rise further. In Ayodhya, the river was at 92.39 metres against a warning level of 91.73 metres.

The Rapti was also rising in eastern Uttar Pradesh. At Balrampur, it had reached 104 metres against a warning level of 103.62 metres. The Central Water Commission said the rivers were showing rising trends at several monitoring stations.

Flood-like conditions were reported in several districts, with rescue teams evacuating people stranded in waterlogged areas and shifting them to safer locations.

Relief and Rescue Operations Underway

The state administration has directed district officials to remain in the field, assess the damage and ensure timely assistance to affected families.

Officials have also been asked to assess crop losses and provide compensation according to rules. Families whose houses have been damaged are to be provided alternative accommodation wherever required, while eligible beneficiaries are to be assisted through housing schemes.

The Relief Department has advised people to avoid unnecessary movement in affected areas and stay away from fast-flowing rivers, streams and drains. The department’s emergency helpline is 1070.

Meanwhile, the weather system responsible for the intense rainfall weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department said the system was likely to continue moving north-northwestwards across Uttar Pradesh and gradually weaken, bringing some reduction in rainfall intensity.
