Four members of a family, including a two-year-old child, were killed when a van carrying 11 people lost control and plunged into a pond in Shivli area of Kanpur Dehat district, Uttar Pradesh on Friday evening. The vehicle was returning from a family function at Kalyanpur when the mishap occurred, police said.
Local residents alerted authorities after hearing screams from the submerged vehicle. With assistance from police, a JCB machine and local divers, rescuers pulled the van out of the deep water. Four persons -Raj Kishore Agnihotri (60), his wife Snehlata (55), daughter Himanshi (30), and grandson Shiv (2) were declared dead at the Community Health Centre in Shivli.
About half a dozen passengers survived and were rushed to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital for further treatment. The vehicle’s driver, identified as Rajkumar, is still missing, and search operations are underway, police said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and further investigation into the cause of the accident is in progress.
