Pilibhit: Uttar Pradesh election authorities have ordered legal action against two electoral registration officers and dismissed a computer assistant after an inquiry found irregularities in more than 10,000 voter entries in the Pilibhit Sadar Assembly constituency.
According to officials, the inquiry found that 10,470 voter detail changes had been approved without the required application forms or supporting records being available in the office. The findings have raised questions about the handling of electoral roll corrections in the constituency.
Over 13,700 Applications Examined
The inquiry found that a computer assistant at the Voter Registration Centre entered 13,779 Form-8 applications between May 31 and August 29, 2026. These applications were submitted for changes to voter details. Of the total applications, 10,470 were approved while 3,309 were rejected.
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer’s office said no application forms or supporting documents linked to the approved entries could be found in the office records.
Authorities have directed legal action against the computer assistant and two electoral registration officers who were posted in the constituency during the period under investigation. The proposed action includes provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Departmental proceedings have also been ordered against the officers.
Pilibhit District Magistrate Alok Kumar said departmental inquiries had been initiated against Sub-Divisional Magistrates Mayank Goswami and Hemant Chaudhary. Both officers have been attached to the district headquarters while the matter is examined. Computer assistant Anil Kumar has been dismissed from service.
Complaints Over Voter ID Numbers
The matter came to light after complaints that some Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers were displaying details belonging to other voters.
The Congress alleged that 13,150 voters in Pilibhit Sadar had identical EPIC numbers despite having different names and fathers’ names. The Samajwadi Party also raised concerns over the voter records.
Election authorities have ordered a detailed examination of Form-6 applications for adding names and Form-7 applications for deleting names entered by the computer assistant between April 10 and October 21. A report has been sought within a day.
Officials said correction of irregular Form-8 entries in accordance with prescribed rules was also underway. The investigation is expected to establish the extent of the discrepancies and determine responsibility for the lapses.
