UPI Transactions Rise 22% to 24.51 Billion in August, Value Hits Rs 29.82 Lakh Crore

New Delhi: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded strong growth in August, with transaction volumes rising 22 per cent year-on-year to 24.51 billion, while the total transaction value increased 20 per cent to Rs 29.82 lakh crore, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Tuesday.

On average, UPI processed around 791 million transactions every day in August. The average daily transaction value stood at approximately Rs 96,205 crore.

    UPI transactions remain strong

In July, UPI recorded 23.66 billion transactions, while the transaction value stood at Rs 29.88 lakh crore, marking a 19 per cent year-on-year increase.

The platform processed nearly 763 million transactions daily in July, with the average daily transaction value at around Rs 96,383 crore.

While the transaction volume increased in August compared with July, the overall transaction value was marginally lower than the previous month.

    IMPS transactions also grow

The Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) also recorded growth during August.

IMPS processed around 360 million transactions during the month, while the transaction value rose 18 per cent to Rs 7.04 lakh crore.

On a daily average, IMPS handled approximately 11.61 million transactions, with the average daily transaction value standing at around Rs 22,701 crore.

    UPI’s decade of rapid growth

UPI has witnessed a massive expansion since its launch, becoming a key part of India’s digital payments ecosystem.

According to an official factsheet, annual UPI transaction volumes increased from around 2 crore transactions in FY 2016-17 to more than 24,162 crore in FY 2025-26, representing nearly a 12,000-fold rise.

The annual transaction value also jumped from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to nearly Rs 314 lakh crore, marking more than a 4,000-fold increase.

The UPI network had 741 live banks and processed 2,365.8 crore transactions worth Rs 29.87 lakh crore in July 2026, according to the latest official data.

    UPI expands overseas

UPI has also expanded its international presence and is currently accepted in 11 countries.

Greece and the Maldives are among the latest countries to adopt India’s real-time payment platform. UPI is also operational in Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, the UAE, France, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Qatar.

The international expansion received another boost after NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of NPCI, entered into a commercial agreement with Uzbekistan’s National Interbank Processing Centre JSC (NIPC), the operator of the country’s HUMO payment system.

The partnership will allow Indian travellers to scan Uzbekistan’s interoperable UZQR codes through their UPI-enabled apps and make instant merchant payments across the country.
