US Withdraws All Bombers From RAF Fairford After Reported New Threat at UK Airbase

London: The United States has withdrawn all of its bombers deployed at Britain’s RAF Fairford airbase and sent the aircraft back to their home stations in the US following a reported new security threat. The development comes as British authorities continue to investigate an alleged Iranian-linked plot targeting the military facility, where American aircraft had been stationed.

A Pentagon official confirmed that all US bombers deployed at RAF Fairford had now returned to their home stations in the United States. The withdrawal included B-1 bombers, while reports also indicated that other US bomber aircraft deployed at the base had been removed. Around a dozen B-1 aircraft had been operating from RAF Fairford before the sudden redeployment.

The US has not disclosed the precise nature of the latest threat or publicly established whether it was directly connected to the alleged Iranian plot under investigation in Britain. The decision to return the aircraft to the US has nevertheless drawn attention because moving them back to their home stations, rather than shifting them to another base in the region, is considered unusual.

Why the Bomber Withdrawal Is Significant

RAF Fairford has long served as an operating location for US long-range bomber deployments in Europe. During the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the base has been used to support American military operations, making the security situation around the facility particularly significant.

The sudden departure of the bombers represents a notable change in the US military’s recent deployment pattern in Britain. Aviation observers reported B-1 bombers leaving the Gloucestershire base on Sunday before the Pentagon confirmed their redeployment.

The move comes as security concerns around the base remain under investigation following several arrests linked to a suspected terror plot.

Five Men Arrested Over Suspected Plot

British authorities arrested five British men in their 20s near RAF Fairford on September 27 on suspicion of terrorism and explosives-related offences. The investigation followed a security incident close to the military facility.

Police examined three vans during the investigation. Petrol was reportedly found, but no viable explosive devices were discovered. The five suspects were subsequently released on bail while the investigation continued.

The case took another turn when British police arrested a 25-year-old British-Iranian dual national in London on October 1 on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in connection with the investigation. He was also later released on bail.

    Iran Link Under Investigation

British authorities have been examining a possible Iranian connection to the alleged plot. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there was a strong indication that Iran had played a part in the incident, although details of the alleged connection have not been publicly established.

Iran has denied involvement and rejected the allegations as baseless. Tehran has also protested the accusations through diplomatic channels.

The US withdrawal of the bombers comes against this backdrop, although American officials have not publicly confirmed that the latest reported threat was directly responsible for the redeployment.

    Trump Criticises Release of Suspects

The decision by British authorities to release the suspects on bail drew criticism from US President Donald Trump, who questioned the move.

The arrests and subsequent releases have kept the security situation surrounding RAF Fairford under close scrutiny as British counter-terrorism authorities continue to investigate the alleged plot and any possible foreign involvement.

    What Is RAF Fairford?

RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire, about 100 miles (160 km) west of London. It has been used by the United States for long-range bomber deployments and is an important operating location for American strategic aviation.

The base does not permanently host the US bombers, which are deployed there according to operational requirements. Its use in American military operations against Iran has nevertheless made it a significant strategic location.

The return of the US bombers to their home stations marks a major shift in the recent deployment pattern at RAF Fairford. The move comes while British authorities continue investigating the suspected plot and amid heightened security concerns surrounding US military assets in the UK.
