Trump imposes 100% tariff on China, Effective November 1

US President Donald Trump has announced a 100% tariff on China. Goods imported from China already face a 30% tariff. Trump announced on Friday that the new tariffs will take effect on November 1st.

Trump has also called for controlling the export of all critical software starting November 1. “This will create problems for almost every country in the world,” Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.

In fact, China tightened export restrictions on rare earth minerals (real earth materials) on October 9th, in response to which Trump has imposed new tariffs. Under these rules, foreign companies using Chinese minerals or technology will be required to obtain licenses. China also stated that it will not grant such licenses to companies affiliated with any foreign military.

China bans export of 5 rare earth minerals

China possesses 17 of the world’s rare earth minerals (rare earth materials), which it exports to the world. These are used in electronics, electric vehicles, and the defence sector. China already controlled seven rare earth minerals, but on October 9th, five more (holmium, erbium, thulium, europium, and ytterbium) were added.

This means that China now controls 12 of the 17 rare minerals. Before using them, an export license from China will be required.

This move could impact the security and industry of the US and its allies, as China controls 70% of the world’s rare earth supplies and 90% of the processing.

China also included products not manufactured in the country under its control.

Trump said, “China has sent a very aggressive letter to the world. It states that starting November 1, 2025, they will impose extensive controls on almost every product. This includes not only products made in China, but also some goods that are not made in China at all. This decision will apply to all countries.”

The US President has called this a moral disgrace. He says China hatched this plan years ago. “It’s hard to believe China would take such a step, but they did. History will tell the rest,” he said.

Trump added, “This incident could shake global trade, as China is the world’s largest exporter. Experts believe this could disrupt supply chains and drive up prices.”

Trump said there was no reason to meet Xi Jinping.

President Trump said, “Since China’s announcement, we have been contacted by many countries who are deeply upset by China’s massive trade protests. Therefore, there seems to be no reason to meet with Xi Jinping at APEC now.”

While it’s still unclear how Trump will implement his threats and how China will respond, Trump stated during a media interaction that he hasn’t canceled their meeting.
