US citizen arrested at Srinagar airport after satellite phone found

Srinagar: An American citizen and his companion were detained at Srinagar International Airport in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday when a satellite phone was recovered from their luggage during a routine security check. According to officials, both were questioned and released to police.

    US citizen arrested, investigation ongoing
Police later confirmed that the American citizen, whose baggage contained the satellite phone, had been arrested. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and they are trying to determine why he brought this banned device.

Strict ban on satellite phones in India
According to officials, possession or use of satellite phones (such as Thuraya and Iridium) is strictly prohibited in India without prior government permission. Bringing such devices without the Department of Telecommunications’ permission can result in arrest, confiscation, and legal action.

Similar cases and warnings have surfaced
This is not the first such case. Previously, an American doctor was stopped at Puducherry airport with a satellite phone. Additionally, action has been taken against a Chinese citizen and a British official for possessing such devices in India.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed airlines to inform passengers of this ban during flights and through communication channels. Meanwhile, travel advisories from the US and UK warn citizens that possessing satellite phones in India without permission could result in heavy fines, equipment confiscation, and even arrest.
