US Diplomat Climbs Mount Everest During Nepal Expedition

Kathmandu: Mike Harker, Public Affairs Chief at the United States Embassy in Nepal, successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest, becoming one of the most prominent diplomatic climbers of the season.

Harker stood atop the 8,848.86-metre peak at around 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, marking his first-ever ascent of the world’s highest mountain. The expedition was organised by Seven Summit Treks, which confirmed the achievement in a social media post.

His accomplishment follows years of engagement with Nepal’s mountain regions and culture. Harker had earlier climbed Lobuche East (6,119 metres) and completed the Annapurna Circuit trek, reflecting his long-standing interest in Himalayan exploration.

    Strong Praise from Mountaineering Community

Colleagues and members of Nepal’s mountaineering community congratulated Harker, describing his ascent as a reflection of his deep admiration for Nepal’s natural heritage and mountain culture.

“Standing on the summit of Everest must have been a profoundly meaningful moment, bringing together his love for the mountains and his respect for this sacred land,” Seven Summit Treks said in a statement.

Chhang Dawa Sherpa, Director of Seven Summit Treks, also praised Harker’s “quiet determination and deep respect for the mountains, Nepal’s culture, and spirituality.”

Growing Global Interest in Everest Expeditions

According to Nepal’s Department of Tourism, 77 US nationals have received permits to climb Mount Everest during the current spring season. Overall, 494 foreign climbers have been permitted this year, marking one of the highest recorded spring climbing seasons.

Officials noted that diplomatic staff, corporate executives, and amateur climbers are increasingly joining guided expeditions as Nepal’s commercial mountaineering industry continues to expand.

    Everest Tourism and Embassy Engagement

Despite geopolitical tensions and rising permit fees, Mount Everest continues to attract climbers from across the world due to its global prestige and adventure appeal.

The US Embassy in Nepal is also preparing to host discussions on mountain tourism, including a panel titled “The Changing Face of Everest Tourism,” highlighting the evolving dynamics of climbing and tourism in the Himalayas.
