US imposes 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has taken a major economic step against Iran, announcing that any country trading with Iran will be subject to a 25 percent tariff on trade in the US. Trump stated in a social media post that this decision will take effect immediately. This move is seen as a way to increase pressure on Iran and its trading partners.

White House: “Diplomacy first choice, but all options open

The White House clarified that President Trump wants to keep the avenue of dialogue with Iran open, but the option of military action is also available if necessary. Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt said that Trump is considering diplomatic messages from Iran, despite Tehran’s public statements. He also stated that Trump will not shy away from using force if necessary to protect US interests. Levitt reported that Trump will also meet with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado this week.

Iran’s Warning and Ongoing Protests

Iran has reacted strongly to the US stance, stating that it is fully prepared to respond to any attack. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei stated that Iran’s military is ready to defend the country and accused the US and Israel of inciting unrest.

Meanwhile, protests continue in Iran. Inflation, economic crisis, and anger against the regime are driving people to the streets. According to a US-based human rights organization, more than 600 people have died so far and more than 10,000 have been arrested.
