Washington: In a characteristically bold display of confidence and self-praise, former US President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday during a luncheon with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the escalating conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan would be “an easy” issue for him to resolve — “if” he were called upon to do so.
“I do understand Pakistan attacked, or there is an attack going on with Afghanistan. That’s an easy one for me to solve if I have to solve that,” Trump said, exuding his trademark assurance in handling global crises.
Tensions Escalate Along Afghanistan-Pakistan Border
Trump’s comments come amid renewed violence along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, where Pakistan has launched fresh airstrikes targeting what it claims are terrorist hideouts inside Afghan territory.
The attacks followed a deadly gun-and-bomb assault on a Pakistani military installation in North Waziristan. Ironically, the strikes came just hours after Islamabad and Kabul extended a two-day ceasefire, raising concerns about the fragility of ongoing peace efforts.
The tensions have also cast uncertainty over the Qatar-mediated peace talks in Doha, which were expected to resume under a temporary truce.
Trump’s Self-Portrait as a Peacemaker
In his typical style, Trump positioned himself as a humanitarian leader with a global reach.
“I like stopping people from being killed. I have saved millions and millions of lives, and I think we are going to have success with this war,” he said, casting himself as both protector and problem-solver.
The former president also revisited one of his favorite grievances — being overlooked by the Nobel Peace Committee — despite what he claimed were multiple global achievements.
“You know we resolved eight others. It’s funny how people say this — if you get this one… every time I do one, they forget about that one. I solved eight wars,” Trump quipped.
“Every time I solve one, they say if you solve the next one, you are going to get the Nobel Prize.”
“I Just Care About Saving Lives”
Trump downplayed the significance of the Nobel Peace Prize, even as he mentioned 2025 Nobel laureate María Corina Machado, referring to her as “a very nice woman”.
“I did not get the Nobel Prize. Somebody got it, was a very nice woman, very nice, I don’t know who she is, but she was very generous. I just care about saving lives,” he said.
Confidence Above Caution
As tensions continue to mount between Islamabad and Kabul, Trump’s remarks blend bravado, diplomacy, and self-congratulation — offering a glimpse into his enduring belief that his leadership could resolve even the most entrenched geopolitical conflicts.
His statements, though laced with spectacle, also reflect a consistent theme of his post-presidency rhetoric: a man who sees himself as a peacemaker above politics, a savior beyond borders, and a negotiator without limits.
