Havana: Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio has accused the United States of pressuring governments around the world to isolate Cuba by ending bilateral healthcare programmes and supporting stricter economic restrictions against the island nation.
In a statement shared on social media, Fernandez de Cossio claimed that Washington’s efforts to persuade countries to terminate healthcare cooperation with Cuba have deprived many communities of access to essential medical services. He also alleged that the US is encouraging governments to change their traditional opposition to the long-standing economic embargo on Cuba and to avoid raising the issue at the United Nations.
Cuba Alleges Growing Economic Pressure
The Cuban diplomat further claimed that the US has successfully pressured some countries to comply with restrictions on fuel exports to Cuba. According to Cuban authorities, these measures have worsened the country’s energy crisis, leading to frequent power outages, transportation shortages and disruptions to economic activity.
Cuba, which relies heavily on imported fuel, has reportedly received only one oil tanker in the past six months, far below the estimated eight shipments required each month to meet the country’s energy needs.
Trump Hints at Possible Policy Shift
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump hinted at a possible change in Washington’s approach towards Cuba during a speech in North Dakota. Referring briefly to the island nation, Trump said Cuba was “coming our way” but did not elaborate or announce any specific policy changes.
The remarks came while he was discussing former President Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy legacy and the expansion of US influence following the Spanish-American War.
US-Cuba Relations Remain Strained
Relations between the United States and Cuba have remained tense for decades due to the US economic embargo and political differences. While Cuba continues to call for the lifting of sanctions, Washington maintains that its policies are intended to promote democratic reforms and human rights on the island.
