Washington, July 10: US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have seized more than 22.35 kilograms (49 pounds, 4 ounces) of cocaine worth an estimated $1.5 million from an air cargo shipment destined for Delhi, authorities said.
The shipment, intercepted on June 17 at an air cargo warehouse near Miami International Airport, had originated in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and was declared as “Music Equipment.” It was carrying four speakers and two amplifiers, inside which officers discovered cocaine concealed in eight pouches and four brick-shaped packages.
Seized during Operation Striker Shield
The interception was made as part of Operation Striker Shield, a US Customs enforcement initiative targeting large commercial consignments that could be exploited by transnational drug trafficking networks during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
During the inspection, CBP officers uncovered a white powdery substance hidden inside the audio equipment. A field test later confirmed it to be cocaine hydrochloride.
Cocaine worth $1.5 million recovered
Authorities estimated the street value of the seized narcotics at approximately $1.5 million. The entire consignment was confiscated before it could be shipped to India.
CBP officials said the seizure highlights ongoing efforts to prevent international drug trafficking through legitimate trade routes.
Investigation underway
Following the seizure, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) opened an investigation into the shipment to identify those responsible for sending and receiving the narcotics.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the sender or intended recipient, nor have they confirmed whether any arrests have been made in connection with the case.
CBP vows continued crackdown
Daniel Alonso, Director of Field Operations for CBP’s Miami and Tampa Field Office, said operations like Striker Shield are helping disrupt transnational criminal organisations attempting to misuse global cargo networks.
He added that the agency will continue using intelligence, advanced targeting systems and field expertise to intercept illegal drug shipments before they reach their destinations.
The investigation into the attempted cocaine smuggling remains ongoing.
