US-South Korea joint military drills cut short following Trump directive

Seoul: The United States and South Korea have cut short their main theatre-level combined military exercise, with the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) drills reduced from 11 days to five days following a directive from US President Donald Trump.

The move marks a significant change in the scale of this year’s exercise and has been viewed as a possible conciliatory gesture towards North Korea.

UFS exercise scaled back

The annual UFS exercise typically includes command-post simulations and live field manoeuvres designed to prepare the allies for contingencies on the Korean Peninsula.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), live drills have been reduced from 14 to seven. The remaining seven exercises will be rescheduled through consultations between Seoul and Washington.

A JCS official said the seven drills would continue as planned and conclude by August 28, with the duration varying according to the nature of each exercise.

The official added that South Korea and the US would work closely to ensure that the adjusted drills are conducted in a combat-realistic manner.

Trump cites cost, North Korea concerns

Trump cited the high financial cost of the exercises, his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and concerns over sending what he described as an inappropriate and hostile message to Pyongyang as reasons for scaling back the operations.

The reduction has also altered the focus of this year’s exercise. Counterattack-oriented drills that are generally conducted during the second week of UFS were cancelled, leaving the remaining exercise activities focused mainly on defensive operations.

North Korea dismisses move

The US and South Korea had earlier discussed whether to conduct live drills separately or have South Korea carry out some exercises independently. Some field manoeuvres may also be postponed.

North Korea has dismissed the reduction in the drills, saying it has no interest in the decision and maintaining that the move does not change what it considers the aggressive nature of the military exercise.
