50% US tariff on India from tomorrow: US issues notification of 25% extra tax

New Delhi, August 26: The US government has issued an official notification imposing an additional 25% tariff on imports from India. This tariff imposed as a penalty will come into effect from 9:31 am on August 27 as per Indian time.

President Donald Trump announced this tariff on August 6 as a penalty for buying oil from Russia. Earlier, citing trade deficit, a 25% tariff was imposed on India from August 7. This means that the overall tariff on Indian goods will now be up to 50%.

It says, ‘The duty mentioned in the list of this document will be applicable on items coming from India. These items will either be brought to the US for use or taken out of the warehouse for use. This rule will come into effect from 12:01 AM EST on August 27, 2025.’

Businessman said- entire trade got disturbed due to tariff

Gujarat based textile businessman Ashish Gujarati said- This is definitely going to have an impact on the overall industry. The US is the biggest buyer of home textiles.

In this segment, we export 35% of India’s total exports to the US. I think a solution to this should come in 2-3 months. There is no clarity right now. This has disturbed the entire trade.

India had termed the 25% additional tariff as wrong

The Indian Foreign Ministry had said on this action- America has recently targeted India’s oil imports from Russia.

We have already made it clear that we buy oil based on market conditions and the aim is to ensure energy security of 140 crore Indians.

It is very unfortunate that the US is imposing additional tariffs on India, while many other countries are doing the same thing in their own interest. We reiterate that these steps are unfair, illegitimate and wrong. India will take every necessary step to protect its national interests.

PM said- we will continue to increase our ability to withstand pressure

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in Ahmedabad a day earlier, without referring to Trump’s tariffs, “My government will never allow any harm to come to small entrepreneurs, farmers and animal herders. No matter how much pressure comes, we will continue to increase our ability to withstand.”
