Authorities in Delhi have deployed heavy security in the Uttam Nagar area of the capital ahead of Eid‑ul‑Fitr celebrations to ensure peace and order. The move comes after recent tensions in the locality that heightened concerns about possible unrest during the festive period. Police forces, including local units and rapid response teams, have been stationed at key points across the neighbourhood to maintain calm and deter any mischief.
The deployment follows a violent incident in early March during Holi celebrations in which a 26‑year‑old man was beaten to death in a clash between families in Uttam Nagar. That incident triggered anxiety among residents and raised fears of further community tensions. Authorities have been closely monitoring the situation since then, wary of any triggers that might spark fresh conflict during Eid gatherings.
The Delhi High Court intervened in the matter, issuing directions to the city police and administration to ensure a peaceful and dignified Eid in the area. The court emphasised that proactive steps were needed to prevent any flare‑ups of violence, and asked law enforcement to remain vigilant and visible in sensitive pockets of Uttam Nagar.
As part of the arrangements, more than 100 police pickets have been established across Uttam Nagar and surrounding parts of southwest Delhi. Officers are conducting regular patrols, identity checks and monitoring of key thoroughfares, markets and mosque precincts where Eid prayers are expected to draw crowds. Rooftop surveillance units and quick response vehicles have also been positioned to respond swiftly if required.
Despite the tense backdrop, local residents have continued their preparations for Eid. In areas such as Hastsal Colony, devotees were seen making last‑minute purchases near the Badi Masjid, even as the heavy police presence remained a constant backdrop. Many in the community have expressed a desire to celebrate peacefully and not let past incidents overshadow the festival.
Delhi officials have appealed to all sections of the community to maintain harmony and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. They have asked shopkeepers, local groups and residents to cooperate with security personnel, follow directives and report any suspicious activity. Traffic police have also advised commuters to be patient, as checks and patrol movements may slow down travel in and around Uttam Nagar.
Security has not just been restricted to Uttam Nagar. Other parts of southwest Delhi, including Dwarka, are also witnessing enhanced vigilance as Eid approaches. This broader alert reflects the city’s effort to balance festive joy with firm maintenance of peace and public safety.
