Severe Cold and Dense Fog Paralyse Uttar Pradesh, IMD Issues Red Alert in 23 Districts

Varanasi: Severe cold and dense fog continue to wreak havoc in Uttar Pradesh. Chilly winds are blowing. Fog has enveloped 30 districts, including Gorakhpur, Barabanki, Bahraich, and Gonda.

Multiple Road Accidents Reported Across UP

Visibility has dropped to zero in many areas. In Bulandshahr, 20 vehicles collided one after another due to fog. Similarly, 10 people were injured in serious road accidents in Prayagraj, Pratapgarh, and Shravasti.

IMD Issues Red, Orange and Yellow Alerts

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe cold warning for the next few days. For the first time this season, 23 districts, including Ayodhya and Sitapur, are under a red alert. 31 districts, including Lucknow and Kanpur, are under an orange alert, and 14 districts, including Prayagraj, are under a yellow alert. The chances of sunshine are low. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and take special care of children and the elderly.

Temperatures Colder Than Shimla and Nainital

On Friday, the state recorded temperatures colder than Shimla (7.5°C), Nainital (8°C), and Jammu (7.1°C). Etawah recorded a temperature of 6.2°C. Sonbhadra and Barabanki were second, with temperatures of 7°C. Agra was the coldest district at 7.1°C, while Fatehpur was the coldest at 7.2°C.

Trains and Flights Disrupted Due to Fog

More than 100 trains are running two to 10 hours late at various railway stations, including Prayagraj and Deoria. Twenty-six flights were cancelled from several airports, including Lucknow, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, and Ayodhya, while more than 20 flights departed late.

Five people have died due to the cold

In Farrukhabad, 52-year-old farmer Harnath Singh died. He was a resident of Nagla Kalar village in the Qadri Gate police station area. He fell unconscious due to the cold while irrigating his crops. Doctors declared him dead. Five people have died due to the cold in the state in the past week.
